5 Things to Look for in a Moving Company

How do I get all my stuff from one place to another? It is the basic question in real estate whether you are moving into a mansion or a tiny apartment. It is the same thing I hear whether people are moving from New Jersey to Florida or from Middlesex to Bridgewater. The task appears so daunting that some people do not sell their home simply because they have no idea how easy it is or how difficult it is to move all one’s things from one place to another.
This is where a professional REALTOR can be a big help. I keep a list of vendors who I work with on a regular basis. These companies go out of their way to make sure my clients have the best service and prices anywhere since they know that I will be sending them business if they adhere to high standards.
Everyone has heard a story about how someone they know has moved and had a bad experience. The most common things I hear are about stolen property, excess charges from the moving company when they arrived at the destination and the guys they hired damaged my home or broke something valuable.
With this in mind, I have worked with the moving companies I recommend to come up with a list of things to look for in a moving company.
1. No excessive use of materials. Many companies will pack one item in a box and bill you for a box, tape, and wrapping. Make certain you walk around during your packing to see how things are being packed. Do not be afraid to ask questions about how it is being done. (There may be a reason to pack one lampshade in a box so it does not get crushed for instance.)
2. No misleading price quotes. All the print should be easy to read and if necessary have the mover read it over with you aloud. You should not need a magnifying glass unless your eyesight is really bad.
3. Ask if they use staff or day labor. Day labor has a tendency to not be as reliable; they may not take the best care of your furnishings or the walls in your home. Staff, on the other hand, will be working for that company for a long time and they work as a team so your move goes faster and smoother.
4. Fuel Charges. Make certain that the fuel charges are spelled out before you put the first item on the truck. Some fly-by-night companies add a fuel charge on long hauls but only tell you that when you get to the destination. You have almost no recourse at that point.
5. Do they clean their trucks after EVERY move? The companies I work with sanitize their trucks after every move. The previous customer might have had bed bugs or something else that would end up in your new home simply because the moving company did not do their job.
