Buyers Continue To Outpace Homes For Sale

Homebuyers continue to overpower the housing market as the number of contracts signed in March dwindled by 5.2 percent compared to the previous month, as revealed by the latest figures from the National Association of Realtors. The association's Pending Home Sales Index shows that pending sales have declined for the first time since last November, and it measures contracts instead of closings.
Lawrence Yun, the chief economist of the National Association of Realtors, highlights that the inventory of available homes for sale still cannot keep up with the demand from prospective buyers. Yun noted, "The shortage of housing inventory is the primary constraint to an increase in sales. Multiple offers still occur on roughly a third of all property listings, and 28 percent of homes are selling above their list price. The inadequate housing supply is not satisfying the nationwide demand." Nonetheless, Yun expects a more positive outlook in the coming months as job opportunities increase and mortgage rates decrease.
